THE SECRET SISTERS’ BRANDI CARLILE-PRODUCED YOU DON’T OWN ME ANYMORE
NOMINATED FOR “BEST FOLK ALBUM”
CROWELL’S “IT AIN’T OVER YET,” FEATURING ROSANNE CASH & JOHN PAUL WHITE, NOMINATED FOR “BEST AMERICAN ROOTS SONG”
New West label-mates The Sister Secrets and Rodney Crowell have each garnered nominations for the 2018 GRAMMY Awards. The Secret Sisters’ Brandi Carlile-produced You Don’t Own Me Anymore has been recognized in the “Best Folk Album” category following its critically acclaimed release this past June. NPR Music calls the album “a set of songs both reflective of tradition and deeply personal,” and American Songwriter adds, “You Don’t Own Me Anymore is a strong, welcome return and a reminder of just how powerful and moving the merging of two stunning voices can be.” Watch the video for single “He’s Fine,” which depicts the sisters recording the album with Carlile, via Paste Magazine HERE. Additionally, Crowell’s “It Ain’t Over Yet,” from his recent album Close Ties, is included in the “Best American Roots Song” category. The song is a vocal collaboration between Crowell, his ex-wife Rosanne Cash, and John Paul White, of which CMT praises, “Never has a song more brilliantly and emotionally captured the journey of a man at a crossroads in his life.” Rolling Stone Country premiered the Reid Long-directed video for the song (seen HERE) stating, “The evocative lyrics call to mind the two-tone, punked-out cover image from Cash’s 1985 LP Rhythm and Romance, which preceded Crowell’s mainstream country breakthrough of five consecutive Number One hits from 1988’s Diamonds & Dirt and the subsequent collapse of the couple’s marriage.” The Secret Sisters’ You Don’t Own Me Anymore and Rodney Crowell’s Close Ties are available now via New West Records at a special discounted price. Winners from each category will be announced at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards ceremony that will be held on January 28, 2018.
The Secret Sisters’ You Don’t Own Me Anymore is Laura and Lydia Rogers’ first new record in over three years and finds the sisters taking their music to new heights. With production by revered Americana singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile, the album is a document of hardship and redemption, a story about how passion and pure artistry can be the strongest sort of salvation. In an in-depth feature with Rolling Stone Country, Carlile commented, “[Laura and Lydia are] complete fucking unicorns and I couldn’t stay away. I remember the first time I ever heard them sing and I literally could not believe that it was happening in real life. They were and continue to be two of the most stunning singers in the world.” Vice’s music site Noisey calls You Don’t Own Me Anymore “gorgeous” and adds, “God help anyone who tries to stand in their way.” Garden & Gun praises, “You Don’t Own Me Anymoreshowcases the Secret Sisters at the top of their craft,” while the Los Angeles Times notes the record’s “hauntingly spare arrangements of songs that revel in Southern Gothic themes, which soar through their exquisite sibling harmonies,” and AllMusic calls the set “a marvel of quiet grandeur and steely Southern pragmatism.” In celebration of the release, The Secret Sisters appeared on CBS This Morning Saturday for a stunning, three-song performance which can be seen HERE. They are currently wrapping up a North American tour through December 10 and have announced additional 2018 dates, which include an appearance at the 30A Songwriter Festival in January followed by more headlining U.S. shows and an extensive Spring European tour. A multi-GRAMMY Award winner, Rodney Crowell has written or recorded 15 #1 songs on the country music charts throughout his successful career, with cuts by country legends (Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, George Strait) to current country chart toppers (Tim McGraw, Keith Urban) to blues icons (Etta James) to rock and roll legends (Van Morrison, Bob Seger). He recently received the prestigious ASCAP Founders Award at the 55th annual ASCAP Country Music Awards and has won five Americana Music Awards, including the Lifetime Achievement Award for Songwriting in 2009 as well as Song of the Year in 2017 for “It Ain’t Over Yet.” Close Ties was released this past March to widespread acclaim with NPR Music stating, “There’s no doubt that Crowell was an architect of Americana as we know it, and with Close Ties, we’re fortunate to have a look at his blueprints.” The Wall Street Journal raves, “[Close Ties] proves energizing, engaging and often fascinating;” and the Associated Press adds, “…the set ranks among his best.” The Los Angeles Times calls it “exceptional,” while No Depression notes, “Whether he’ll accept it or not, [Crowell has] now assumed the mantle of the late Guy Clark and Townes Van Zandt, two poets who could zero in on our emotions by telling wry, straight-as-an-arrow stories about the desiccated desolation of the failures or triumphs of relationships, or the battered denizens of small towns searching for truth, comfort, love, or refuge in their own halting ways.” Crowell has announced tour dates for 2018, which include performances on the Outlaw Country Cruise in January followed by a solo acoustic tour with Tommy Emmanuel.
