Maryland native singer-songwriter Sam Grow may seem new to the scene, when in fact he’s been into it since he was young. His father introduced the younger Sam to music at a very early age, and seeing the talent Sam had, his family moved to Kansas where he got his first chance to perform, singing Amazing Grace at a local church.
The singer-songwriter began writing music at the age of 10 as a way to distract from unpleasant moments he’d been going through. As an escape the trauma, he began writing about them. After his parents divorced and his dad returned to Maryland, he begged him to buy him a guitar, which he obliged as long as he used it to further his career, creating his own music. Sam stayed true to his word and in fact still owns the guitar.
After a trip to Music City with his father, he enrolled in college in Maryland as a music major, dropping out shortly after to work on his craft. He spent a lot of time playing full time, performing, and writing, even cutting an indie album Ignition in 2009 and started touring his home state. After branching out on tours, he landed a chance to play at Nashville Underground, where he invited and met producer Matt McLure.
McLure, impressed with Sam, introduced him to a bevy of publishers where deals were in abundance, thus allowing Sam to make the move to Nashville in 2013, releasing a self titled EP in 2014, followed by two more in 2017 & 2018. These were the key in him being invited to open for country rapper Colt Ford and signing under his Average Joes label, where he released two songs and is set to release his sophomore album, This Town, today.
Produced by Colt Ford and Noah Gordon, This Town contains 12 tracks that were co-written by Nashville notables Terry McBride, Brice Long, and many more. Prior to today, previously released tunes, “This Town”, “Song About You,” and “Me & Mine” have over 55 million streams.
The songs are reflections of true stories in Sam’s life and the lives of others. In a statement he says “this album is a reflection of past and current relationships, and the small towns I’ve lived those stories in.” Each tune is crafted to pull the listener in and to share, if you will, each story to enlist feelings from fans that may have had similar instances in their own lives. Sam’s vocals are pure country, and often shift between an edgy rock vibe to a soft country crooner’s tone, making this album a great collection to any playlist.
