This year’s National Grandparents’ Day was held on September 8, but celebrating grandmas and grandpas on one day isn’t enough! Grandparents should be celebrated everyday – by those of us who are lucky enough to still hug them, as well as those who might have left us in life but are with us everyday in spirit. North Carolina native Paige King Johnson knows that feeling of loss and missing of her grandpa, but also feels his love around her all the time. The singer-songwriter recently released her single “Grandpa’s Little Girl” and today she’s releasing an emotional acoustic performance video of the song with The Country Note.
“’Grandpa’s Little Girl’ is all about that special something – in my case, a hand-me-down 1997 F-150 – that never ceases to bring back memories of a person you’re missing on the other side of Heaven,” explains Johnson. “My Papa was my whole world growing up, and although I miss him every day, I’m so grateful to have that truck to remind me of him.”
Johnson’s lyrics express those feelings and memories as they give the listener a vivid image of her being in that truck as a little girl while reminiscing as a adult:
But most of all it still feels like you
Placing my hands on 10 and 2
While you’re helping my legs try to reach for the pedals so far away
10 years old is too young to drive
But it sure as hell ain’t the right time
To say goodbye to the man who made your world
I may be grown and you may be gone
But in this truck I’m still Grandpa’s little girl
The tenderness of “Grandpa’s Little Girl” deserved a video that allowed the listener to really absorb the song – stripped down to lyrics, vocals and guitar. This acoustic performance video does just that. “Making this acoustic video was extra special,” says Johnson. “I wanted to make sure we left enough space for the lyrics to breathe and settle on the hearts of people who would be watching or listening. I hope that shines through!”
