Christina Taylor’s “I Got That From You” Explores What Makes Her, Her

“[I Got That From You] is about how we get a lot of our character traits and looks from our family, but we can also be molded into the people we are through the things we go through and experience, including relationships gone bad.” – Christina Taylor

With 2020 now in the rearview, Christina Taylor is ready to get back on track with new music – five new singles to be exact! On Friday (7/2), Christina delivered the first of the pentad – I Got That From You – a deep, meaningful song that looks within oneself and the who/what/where/why/how that causes us to become who we are.

We recently caught up with Christina to talk about the past year, the new single and video, and more.

CN: As we hit the one-year mark of COVID-19, we hope everyone in your circle is safe and healthy. How are you holding up?

CT: I feel so thankful that I can say everyone in my circle is healthy! It has been a hard year, but it could be a lot worse and that’s what I’ve kept telling myself throughout this entire pandemic.

CN: It’s hard to believe that it’s been almost four years since we chatted for your Getting to Know feature which was right around the release of your That Girl EP! To say you’ve been busy is a bit of an understatement! Fill us in on what you’ve been up to since then.

CT: Yes, a lot has happened since then! I have gone on to release multiple singles, my last being “As Good As You Look,” which was a duet with an artist named Brett Kissel. After releasing that song, I thought it was time to slow down for a second and take some time to write and learn a little bit more about who I am as an artist. Then the pandemic hit, and so my time off to write lasted a little bit longer than expected. But, I wrote some great songs over quarantine, and I’m so ready to get them out for the world to hear!

CN: You recently released your newest single “I Got That From You.” It’s a very emotional track – what was the story of heartbreak that inspired it?

CT: We didn’t write “I Got That From You” around a specific heartbreak, but we did have to pull from our past experiences with heartbreak in order to write it. The song is about how we get a lot of our character traits and looks from our family, but we can also be molded into the people we are through the things we go through and experience, including relationships gone bad.

CN: The single was co-written with Lynn Hutton and Kelley Lovelace right before the pandemic. Can you take us through the writing session(s) for the song? Was it a fairly quick and easy song to write?

CT: Parts of the song came easy, but there were definitely parts we got stuck on. It ended up taking us two separate writing sessions in order to perfect it and make sure the song said everything we wanted it to say!

CN: You are also releasing a music video to go along with the single. What can you tell us about it?

CT: This video is completely different from anything I’ve done before! I can’t give too much away, but I will say that Lexy Burke filmed and directed it, and she had the idea to shoot it at a new location in Nashville. It turned out amazing and really gets across the emotion in the song.

Check out the video below:

CN: “I Got That From You” is the first of five singles that you are expected to release this year. Were these songs you had already written and waiting to record, or did you write them during the pandemic?

CT: I wrote two of the songs I’m releasing this year during the pandemic! Thankfully, Zoom writes proved effective, and we were all still able to write some cool stuff even though we weren’t in the room together.

CN:. In March you released Covers Vol. 1, which featured three covers including Jason Aldean’s “Got What I Got”, Post Malone’s “Better Now” and “Sleeping on the Blacktop” by Colter Wall (a personal favorite song and artist). Excellent cover by you and your bandmates! Anyone who knows that song knows how unique and deep Colter’s voice is. How did you rearrange the song to fit your range?

CT: Thank you so much! I ended up singing the Colter Wall song an entire octave above where he sang it. The fact that his voice is so deep is actually what enticed me to cover the song and hear what a female voice would sound like on a track penned for such a deep vocal. I’m so glad you enjoyed it!

CN: Now that more restrictions are being lifted nationwide – live music is slowing making its way back! How excited are you to get back out there performing, especially with a new music to bring to your fans?

CT: I am SO excited to get back on stage soon and have that in-person connection with people again. There’s no better feeling in the world!

CN: Do you have any upcoming events – either in person or online?

CT: I don’t have any confirmed dates yet but hopefully we’ll have something booked here soon. Stay tuned!
