Because the power of writing is such a cathartic tool, we have been blessed with some of the most incredible stories – on page and in song. Virginia native Chancy DeAnne is one of those writers. A registered nurse who grew up in coal mining country, DeAnne has many stories to tell and is ready and able to so. This past May she released her debut self-titled EP filled with southern stories and that traditional country essence that many of us, DeAnne included, keep our ears open for.
We recently caught up with DeAnne to talk about her musical journey, the new EP and what’s to come.
CN: Growing up around the coal mining industry, how did this influence your music?
CD: Music is a significant part of my heritage, particularly bluegrass, folk, and country music. Growing up in a community where these genres are prevalent, I’ve been deeply influenced by songs that tell the stories of miners and their families. One song I used to sing, which always sent chills down my spine, goes, “The mine owner watches the belts run black, with no concern for the miners’ lungs or the pain in their back.” This line resonates with me because it reflects the harsh realities I’ve witnessed firsthand. My grandfather spent his life tethered to an oxygen tank due to his work in the mines, and many men and women from my hometown suffer from the physical toll of working underground. Despite these hardships, I am incredibly proud of my roots and the resilience of my community. These experiences have profoundly shaped my appreciation for music that tells genuine, powerful stories.
CN: Which artists have influenced you both personally and as an artist?
CD: Dolly Parton is a significant influence on me. I deeply admire her Appalachian sound, which resonates with my own musical roots. Beyond her musical talent, I respect her immensely for the way she helps people without seeking recognition. Her generosity and humility inspire me to use my talents not just for personal success but to make a positive impact on others, just as she does.
CN: As a full time nurse, how have you balanced your career with your music dreams?
CD: Balancing my nursing career with my music career requires careful time management and dedication. I work part-time as a nurse to provide the necessary flexibility to focus on my singing. Nursing brings me immense fulfillment, but singing is a God-given talent that I am passionate about sharing with the world.
CN: How has TikTok changed your career?
CD: I was fortunate to connect with Underdog Publishing through TikTok. The platform allowed me to share my music with a broader audience, leading to this invaluable opportunity to collaborate with them.
CN: Your latest single, “F*** Country Music” celebrates the genre, what was your inspiration behind recording this song?
CD: I deeply appreciate the traditional roots of country music. While I enjoy contemporary music, I sometimes yearn for the more classic sounds that I grew up with. My aim is to blend the traditional elements with modern influences to create music that honors the past while embracing the future.
CN: How did you choose “A Place To Fall Apart” as your debut single?
CD: I chose to release a ballad first because I felt it was the most authentic expression of my artistry. The song’s emotional depth and personal significance made it the perfect introduction to my music. It reflects my experiences with heartbreak and the desire for escape, themes that resonate deeply with me.
CN: What can fans expect from your new project coming out this spring?
CD: The central theme of my EP is a celebration of traditional country values and the essence of Southern life. It reflects my experiences growing up in the South and aims to capture the spirit of country living that has evolved over the years.
CN: Do you have a favorite track on your new project?
CD: “Don’t Tell Motel” is my favorite track on the EP because of its raw and honest portrayal of struggles that are often overlooked. The song’s authenticity and relatability make it particularly meaningful to me.
CN: What is your favorite song at the moment?
CD: My debut EP holds a special place in my heart. It represents the culmination of my journey from a small coal mining town to pursuing my dream of making music. This five-song collection will always be my cherished project, embodying my gratitude and the stories I want to share with the world.
CN: If you could collaborate with any one artist, who would it be?
CD: Morgan Wallen is an artist I greatly admire in the current country music scene. His talent is truly inspiring.
CN: What was the first concert you ever attended?
CD: The Kentucky Headhunters years ago
CN: If you could describe yourself in one word, what would it be and why?
CD: Selfless. My dedication to my nursing patients, especially during emergencies like tornado warnings in Tennessee, exemplifies my commitment to putting others’ needs before my own. I would worry myself to death. This trait defines my approach to both my professional and personal life.
CN: What else can fans look forward to this summer?
CD: The second EP will offer a deeper exploration of my upbringing in a holler. It will provide listeners with a more detailed narrative of my background and the unique experiences that have shaped my perspective and music. But for now just lots of ME.
