Kasey Tyndall arrived in Nashville from East Carolina University, leaving in the middle of her studies to become a nurse to follow another dream. Winning a radio station contest in 2014 to sing “We Were Us” with Keith Urban helped kick-start her journey and in early 2017 Tyndall released her debut single, “Everything Is Texas.” Her follow up single “Bar That’s Open,” which she co-wrote with fellow rock-country artist Ashley McBryde and Lainey Wilson, earned her a mention from Rolling Stone Magazine calling her, “A hard rock-country badass with the best song about a bar since Toby Keith’s ‘I Love This Bar.’”
Carolina Country Music Fest was the perfect place to catch up with Tyndall. We sat down with her to talk about her music, inspiration and that Rolling Stone quote.
When asking about “Bar That’s Open” we mentioned that she and McBryde had both been quoted as “hard rock-country badasses” by Rolling Stone. “If I’m in the same category as her (McBryde) I feel pretty damn cool. I grew up on country and rock ‘n’ roll so I just mix ‘em all together and that’s me.”
Tyndall’s debut album, Between Salvation and Survival, was released late last year. “My album came out in December. It has been an amazing experience going on the road with it. It’s like my baby. And it’s been really fun.”
The album’s title comes from her next single, “Bottle and the Bible.” “This album, I’ve been writing for it for four years. It’s been amazing learning who I am as an artist and a writer throughout this whole process. I got to write it with some of the most incredible talents in Nashville. It was such an honor to make this album with all these wonderful people. I can’t wait for the next project.”
Tyndall has co-written with some of Nashville’s best including Taylor Phillips (think Luke Combs #1s), Tyndall’s producer Tommy Cecil and Driver Williams from Eric Church’s band as well as newcomers such as Lainey Wilson. “Lainey Wilson is not only my best friend and roommate, she’s an up and coming artist and we connect with our music. We write together a lot. She is awesome. You guys should check her out.”
Mixing rock and country is something that people are drawn to and Tyndall has a genuine ability to connect the two genres. “… I’ve opened for lots of different people, from Wheeler Walker Jr. to Stryper and no matter who I open for everybody loves rock ‘n’ roll. Deep down everybody loves rock ‘n’ roll. I’m thankful to be able to do it and I’m thankful to be able to throw some rock ‘n’ roll into my country. Another song we have coming out is called “Jesus and Joan Jett.” It’s me to a tee so be looking out for that one.”
Though Tyndall has toured with and opened for a lot of great artists, she does have one she would love to tour with. “I would love to tour with Eric Church. I just feel like we are so much alike. But two of my favorites that I have toured with were Granger Smith and The Cadillac Three. I’d love to get back on the road with them.”
Traveling in support of her album has taken Tyndall all around the country, including CMA Fest. “Oh yeah, we just did five shows in two days. We’re kinda of everywhere right now. I write for Sony during the week so after the show I’ll run home to Nashville real quick to write for a couple of days, hit the road for a couple of days, come back and do it all over again.”
Tyndall loves connecting with her fans. “I feel like I am really open especially on social media. I love Jesus. And I want people to know that. I love to have a good time and you have to come to my show to get the full experience. We have a great time on the road and I’m excited to play. Me and my band, they are like my brothers. We have a good time on stage, we cut up. If one of us messes up we laugh at one another. It’s just a lot of fun.”
