In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, Nashville-based singer-songwriter Alice Wallace has released “Imposter,” the latest single and its accompanying video from her forthcoming LP, Here I Am, out June 28th via Mule Kick Records. Chorus.fm called the track an “important song about imposter syndrome,” and described the video as “empowering” in their premiere.

“Even though I have been writing and performing music since I was a teenager, I still find myself questioning whether I am qualified to stand on a stage and sing for an audience or record in a room with GRAMMY-winning musicians,” Wallace explains. “It’s a feeling I’ve always struggled with, but it reached a fever pitch for me when I was preparing this album. I wrote this song to help me feel less alone in the battle against my own mind, but the fact is, it’s such a common feeling, especially among women.

It’s time to embrace our inner imposters.” The video for “Imposter” was directed and filmed by Anana Kaye and Irakli Gabriel of Duende Vision.

“Imposter” follows the release of lead single, “Letting It Go,” an ethereal track about processing and moving on from the things that have hurt you deeply. “The older I get, the more I realize how often I have hung onto past hurts, and how much it affects me,” says Wallace. “This song was very cathartic to write – letting go of the past leaves room for all the good things still to come.”

Here I Am marks a return to themes of self-examination after several collections that featured predominantly story songs. The album’s title hints at her deeply personal, confessional songwriting style, one that invites the listener to gaze at her beating heart as each intimate secret pours out, propelled by a powerful, expressive delivery that marks her as one of the true vocal talents of her generation.

Wallace moved to Nashville four years ago after more than a decade in southern California, and Here I Am is the first of her albums to be recorded in true Music City style, backed by a lineup of world-class musicians and recorded in two whirlwind days with no rehearsal. Produced by Nick Buda (Taylor Swift, Martina McBride, Dolly Parton), the album features some of the most talented musicians Nashville has to offer. In addition to Buda on drums, the record features GRAMMY-winning guitarist Kenny Greenberg (Willie Nelson, Wynonna Judd, Hayes Carll), bassist Ted Pecchio (Doyle Bramhall II, Susan Tedeschi), and keyboardist Jimmy Wallace (The Wallflowers).

Named 2017 Female Vocalist of the Year by the California Country Awards, Wallace has previously released four solo albums, the latest of which, 2019’s Into the Blue, earned recognition from Rolling Stone Country with the title track being named one of the Best Americana Songs to Hear Now, followed by Lucky Break via Side Pony, a duo project with friend Caitlin Cannon that took the pair across the United States and Europe. Her voice has been called “a powerful natural occurrence… an awe-striking wonder” (Saving Country Music).

“This is an album about reclaiming myself–as an artist, as a woman, and as a person navigating a world that is beautiful and confusing and harsh,” says Wallace. Since releasing her last LP, Wallace’s life has changed immensely – a cross-country move, a career unexpectedly halted in 2020, falling in love more deeply than before, and being heartbroken more painfully than she ever knew she could be. “All of those changes gave me a chance to examine myself in ways I never had. This album covers a spectrum of emotion I haven’t been brave enough to share on an album before,” she continues. “This album is me.”
