NASHVILLE, TENN. “American Idol” alums Kat Luna and Alex Georgia took the judges’ advice to heart and have joined together to officially form the duo, Kat & Alex. Their debut single “How Many Times” will be out Friday.
The rising stars burst onto the music scene when they competed individually on “American Idol” earlier this year, giving viewers their first taste of the couple’s unique Country-Latin sound. It was there that Luke Bryan suggested the two form a duo and even helped the two select potential names. After their run on Idol, the pair moved to Nashville to embark on their musical journey together. In a few short months, their distinct blend of voices has ignited a fire within the music community, and the two are perfectly positioned to blaze their own trail.
“How Many Times,” a mid-tempo, love-on-the-rocks song, was penned by Grammy-winning songwriter Jordan Reynolds (who has also written hits for Dan + Shay, Keith Urban and Thomas Rhett) and his frequent co-writing partner Robyn Collins (whose songs have been cut by Josh Gracin, Kalie Shorr, Hayley Orrantia and others). “How Many Times” perfectly captures the push and pull of the all too familiar emotions of an on-again off-again relationship questioning, “how many times can a heart break before it’s too late?”
About the song, Alex noted “We fell in love with the musicality of the song the second we heard it. Jordan’s incredible talent combined perfectly with Robyn’s powerful, yet relatable lyrics in a way that just felt right.” Kat added, “The song was written so that no matter what stage of life you are in when you hear it, it still tugs at your heart strings…and that’s what makes it so beautiful.”
The pair teamed up with Grammy-nominated producer Brad Hill (Maren Morris, Brothers Osborne), and together they created a song featuring gritty, powerful vocals and rowdy guitars. The song was the perfect choice to highlight the duo’s unique musical style, which can best be described as a unique blend of country and soul with Latin roots. Kat’s textured, savory vocals complement Alex’s smooth, low-country sound.
Paying homage to their Latin heritage, the duo is also set to release a version of the song featuring a Spanish chorus, a rarity in the country music genre. “Growing up, Spanish was the first language for both of us,” Alex explained. “We re-wrote the chorus in Spanish and maintained the same vibe to keep it natural. We really want to create a new lane of Country Latin music. We keep it country… but just with Spanish.” The duo, along with Julio Reyes, has a songwriting credit on this version.
