Who are you? This is the golden question that sparked the idea for Brooke Lynn to create her debut EP, titled appropriately in response, “Hellfire, Holy Water.” “The only way I knew how to answer such an intimidating question is that I’m not one thing or the other, I can’t really be placed in a box,” explains Lynn. “I go out on Friday nights and drink with my friends and am at church every Sunday morning. I am hellfire and holy water.” Lynn shows her audience who she truly is through each song on the EP, as a human being and as an artist, layer by layer, song by song.
Lynn is kicking off her debut EP with the release of the first single, Red Eyes, a vulnerable and empowering ballad based on a true story. This story-song brings listeners on a roller coaster of emotions that mimic those of the main character in the song. It starts out simple and withdrawn with acoustic and vocals, and continues to build and intensify as the story unfolds. The steel guitar tugs at listeners’ heartstrings as they feel the devastation transition into anger that then recedes back into sadness. Lynn ends the song with a sigh of relief as she repeats the very first line of the song: “Funny how the last five years could mean nothing.”
Last year after a show, Lynn was approached by a fan who told her the story that inspired this song. Lynn brought this idea to Red Eyes co-writers Stefanie Joyce and Manning Rothrock, and they knew they had created magic out of another’s difficult reality. “We wanted to bring power and beauty into the devastation of a relationship ending, especially ones that cannot be wholly understood, with no explanation or closure,” Lynn says. “There is strength in feeling every emotion that accompanies a breakup, the sadness, anger, and disappointment are all part of the healing.”
Brooke Lynn is an up and coming country music artist whose soulful, southern-rock flare cements her sound as one all it’s own in the scene. She strives to create music that gives her fans their own “three minutes;” three minutes to cry, to feel pain, to love, to celebrate, or simply sit back and relax. Brooke’s lyrics place a special emphasis on empowerment, confidence, and fearlessness and encourage anyone who hears them to own not only who they are but who they want to be. Listeners may feel like Brooke Lynn’s songs are written specifically for them but what they are hearing is a peek into Lynn’s own heart and desires.
Brooke Lynn will be following up with the second release, Layers, off of her debut EP, Hellfire, Holy Water, set for release May 12th, 2021.
