PRODUCED BY DAVE COBB
THERE IS AN AGELESSNESS ABOUT HIM SO UNUSUAL IN SOMEONE SO YOUNG.”
—RICK RUBIN “COLTER WALL IS BAR-NONE THE BEST YOUNGSINGER-SONGWRITER I’VE
SEEN IN TWENTY YEARS.”
—STEVE EARLE
Colter Wall’s anticipated self-titled debut album is now streaming in full exclusively at Vice’s Noisey. Of the music, Noisey praises, “With grizzled vocals and a world-weary attitude, Wall’s songwriting invokes images of an Old West rambling man who’s traveled the world, only to find everyone is suffering just the same as him” and goes on to declare, “If Wall is the future of country music, I want that future now.”Out this Friday, May 12 on Young Mary’s Record Co. via Thirty Tigers, Colter Wall is now available for pre-order, which includes instant download of four album tracks: “Thirteen Silver Dollars,” “Codeine Dream,” “Motorcycle” and “Kate McCannon.”
Already receiving critical acclaim, Rolling Stone asserts, “It’s a short song—an isolated detail from a larger story that’s never finished, encouraging listeners to whip up their own endings—but Wall makes the most of his time, filling the track with the deep rumble of his world-weary baritone and the twang of his acoustic guitar,” while American Songwriter praises, “…with his deep, husky voice and world-weary lyrics, may sound like a grizzled songwriting veteran, but the buzzed about new artist is actually only 21” and Entertainment Weeklydeclares, “Country music has a long history of murderous story-songs—just peep the back catalogs of Nashville’s holy trinity of Waylon, Willie, and Johnny—and newcomer Colter Wall aims to join their ranks with his slow-rolling ‘Kate McCannon.’”
Produced by Grammy Award-winning producer Dave Cobb, the 11-track album was recorded at Nashville’s historic RCA Studio A. In addition to Wall on vocals and acoustic guitar and Cobb on acoustic guitar, the album features Chris Powell (Brent Cobb, Jamey Johnson) on drums, Robbie Turner (Waylon Jennings, Chris Stapleton) on pedal steel and Mike Webb (Southern Family) on piano.
Of the album, Wall comments, “I certainly feel like this record is far more mature than the EP in the content of the songs, stories and general sound. This record is a little more personal and most all the stories are true tales of my life.” He continues, “Dave’s a remarkable producer and equally impressive as a musician. Having both Dave the producer and Dave the player on this record felt like winning the lottery. I feel that way about everyone who played on this record. Kind of surreal really.”
A native of Swift Current, Saskatchewan Canada, Wall’s sound is comprised of resonate and raw baritone vocals, folk and bluegrass style guitar and banjo picking, steady kick-drum stomping, and visually provoking, story telling lyrics. Since debuting in 2015 with the release of his EP, Imaginary Appalachia, Wall has received overwhelming acclaim—Steve Earle declares, “Colter Wall is bar-none the best young singer-songwriter I’ve seen in twenty years,” while Rick Rubin, who recently signed Wall to his American Songs publishing company, proclaims, “Colter sings and writes songs in ways seemingly lost in time. There is an agelessness about him so unusual in someone so young.”
Additionally, Rolling Stone selected him as one of “10 New Country Artists You Need To Know,” praising, “Sounds Like: The rough-hewn rumblings of a 21 year-old Canadian millennial armed with the weathered voice, writing chops and bushy facial hair of his 1970s country favorites.” Moreover, Wall’s song, “Sleeping On The Backtop,” was recently featured on the soundtrack of the Oscar-nominated film, “Hell or High Water.” The track has gone on to garner over one million streams on Spotify.
In celebration of the release, Wall will tour throughout 2017, including dates with Cody Jinks and Jamestown Revival as well as a show at New York’s Rockwood Music Hall on May 15. See below for details. Additional dates to be announced soon.
