Since 2015, Caleb Young Band has been perfecting their genre-bending sound of country and rock paired with authentic lyrics, leading up to their first two singles – “Long Road Home” and “Friend For Tonight” – released just last year. This Friday (7/9), the Texas quintet are set to release their debut 5-track EP Down In Flames, and today they are exclusively premiering the title track with The Country Note.
“I think what I’m most excited about is showing our fans the diversity within our group,” says Young. “We have rock and roll backgrounds that mix with traditional country backgrounds, and with those being put together have created what I think is a powerful and dynamic sound. Everything from the traditional sounds of “Southern Ties” and “Sounds the same” to the 80’s-esque ballad that comes out in “Down in Flames” which we named the EP after. It is an arrangement that I hope many enjoy, and expresses sentiments that I hope many can relate with.”
“Down in Flames” showcases Young’s deep, raspy vocals as the strumming of acoustic guitar and pedal steel make way for killer electric guitar solos. The lyrics of the chorus are a perfect example CYB’s honest lyrics – beautifully written while oozing palpable melancholy:
‘Cause the life we made
All went down in flames
Now only ashes and the embers remain
And the words we spoke
Have all been lost in the smoke
Too late to find a reason to stay
You can fly so high but it all ends the same
You go down in flames
