As the saying goes – “you can’t always judge a book by its cover” – and as cliché as that may be, it’s a lesson that upcoming country singer Kamryn Palmer knows something about in her debut single “Devil In An Angel Disguise.” The Indian Harbour Beach, Florida native released the track in October of 2018 and today she is exclusively premiering the lyric video with The Country Note!
From the moment she met him, Palmer knew a relationship not only wasn’t a good idea, but it wasn’t going to go anywhere. Still she just couldn’t help being drawn into his charisma and good-looks and ends up falling for the not-so-Prince Charming. But rather than making “Devil In An Angel Disguise” an “oh woe is me” track, she turns it into a female anthem, standing up for herself and sending this deceiver away. At only 19 years old, Palmer’s vocals are clear and strong, delivering the song’s message with confidence that matches the courage of the song’s protagonist.
Palmer’s songwriting skills are exceptional, which isn’t all that much a surprise considering she was 1 of 40 singer-songwriters in the nation to participate in Grammy Camp Nashville in 2017. Her lyrical style is very visual, taking the listener through the story as it unfolds:
I’m not surprised
I knew it from the first time I looked in your eyes
They were gorgeous but full of lies
And now here I am saying my goodbyes,
Farewell so swell, It was like being in heaven and hell at the same time
You’re like the devil in angel … in an angel disguise
Directed by Lexy Kadey, each scene of the lyric video shows Palmer alone, allowing the listener to absorb her voice and follow the words without distraction. Her long black cape and high boots along with her flowing blonde hair provides a very modern Stevie Nicks aura about her (there’s also some really cool red and orange smoke, possibly representing the hell she was surrounded by).
