Growing up surrounded by the words of some of music’s most iconic lyricists – Judy Collins, Joni Mitchell, Simon & Garfunkel – one can’t think of Charlotte Morris without thinking songwriter. The practice of putting pen to paper is as natural as the blood flowing through her veins. Since her debut EP To New York, with Love in 2018, Morris continues to release songs that are deeply personal but universal, providing a platform for discussion about issues that need to be recognized, including addiction, PTSD, divorce, anxiety and loss of love. “If My Heart Had a Say” – a personal tale of a broken heart – is the fourth single off her upcoming album WILD CHILD, and is premiering today exclusively with The Country Note.
“‘If My Heart Had a Say’ is one of the oldest songs on the album! I actually started writing this back in 2019 when I was living in NYC,” explains Morris. “To me, this is the perfect depiction of what I (and I’m sure a lot of other broken hearted folks) have struggled with during a breakup – the internal push and pull of knowing that someone isn’t right for you anymore, but having your heart pull so far in the direction of giving them another chance, or calling them up … going back to the thing that your brain knows is wrong.”
No I can’t come back to you
Even if I wanted to
Even if my heart wasn’t ripping at the seams
‘Cause I know what’s best for me
And you’re not the man I thought you’d be
But I know I’ve overcome this pain before
If my heart had a say I might be yours
But it’s time to shut that door
“I have this problem a lot,” continues Morris. “I love with my whole heart and so, when I love someone, my heart is fully in control. It doesn’t matter what my brain says about logically thinking through issues, or red flags, or incompatibility. My heart is in charge. But when I wrote this, this was one of the few times I actually forced my heart out of the decision making. It had no say, because if it had been up to my heart, I would’ve given the guy another chance. Luckily my brain knew better.”
