One of the obvious reasons we usually connect with a song is because the lyrics are written from the point of view of a person. Whether its a view we agree with or a perspective we didn’t think of or necessarily align with, we can still relate because emotions and thoughts are universal. We don’t often think of lyrics written from the point of view of an inanimate object, however, songs such as these activate a different part of our imagination. We can suddenly feel for something that has no ability to feel. The ingenuity of Daryl Mosley’s songwriting is able to do just this in “The Bible In The Drawer,’ premiering today with The Country Note.
In addition to feelings and emotions, Mosley’s lyrics bring forth an obvious but also inherent spirituality; that this bible is in fact living by helping those who seek it:
The power that’s within me is available to all
So when some stranger picks me up I’m there to heed the call
The answers you are seeking for today and evermore
Are pressed upon my pages
I’m the Bible in the drawer
“I love songs that are told from the perspective of something that can’t typically tell its own story,” says Mosley. “Songs like “This Old House” by Thom Schuyler and Craig Bickhardt and “Indian Head Penny” by Guy Clark are great examples of songs that come from that perspective. “The Bible In The Drawer” sings about the life and calling of one of those Gideon Bibles placed in an unnamed hotel and the many people whose lives were impacted by it. Sarah Davidson of the Grammy-nominated group High Road sings harmony on it. It has quickly become one of the most popular songs that I play live.”

“The Bible In The Drawer” will be featured on A Life Well Lived, Mosley’s third album on Pinecastle Records which he co-produced with Grascals’ founder Danny Roberts. “Danny Roberts is one of my closest friends,” shares Mosley. “We toured together during the 1990s in the band New Tradition. Danny has an incredible studio ear and loves the recording process. Before I started on my first solo album, Danny was the first call I made asking him to co-produce the album with me. He has done that on all three albums and I can in all sincerity say that the albums would not be what they are without Danny.”
