The daughter of Andrea Roberts (The Andrea Roberts Agency) and Danny Roberts (The Grascals), Jaelee Roberts was born with Bluegrass pedigree in her blood. At just 20 years old, the Murfreesboro native has a resume that some veterans of the industry can’t hold a candle to: she’s performed/recorded with Larry Sparks, Rhonda Vincent, Marty Raybon, Carl Jackson, Larry Cordle, Russell Moore, Daryl Mosley, The Grascals (of course) and more; has stepped foot on the Grand Ole Opry Stage as a performer, in-line with the Grand Ole Opry Square Dancers and for her live audition to join the 2020 IBMA Entertainer of the Year and three-time Vocal Group of the Year (2019-21) Sister Sadie, to which the ladies invited her as their lead guitarist and vocalist on February 23, 2021 (Roberts won her own IBMA Momentum Award for Vocalist of the Year in 2021).
In addition to all this, Roberts also has pushed forth on her solo career, releasing four singles leading up to her debut album Something You Didn’t Count On, available this Friday (5/20) via Mountain Home Music Company. Perhaps one of the most anticipated album releases across Bluegrass and Country, Roberts’ debut showcases herself – as a singer, as a musician, and as a songwriter – letting the listener get to know who she is. And like any incredible artist, Roberts’ interest in music varies across genres, leading her to record her version of Fleetwood Mac’s iconic “Landslide,” premiering exclusively today with The Country Note.
Roberts shared how she came to cover the classic, some behind the recording tidbits and who that familiar voice is on harmonies….
“Landslide’ is a song that I’ve had a connection to for a long time because I discovered Fleetwood Mac at a very young age and fell in love with their music. Stevie Nicks has one of the most distinctive voices in all musical genres, and I am a big fan of hers and the song ‘Landslide’ like so many others are. I also really like the ‘Landslide’ version covered by The Chicks as well, and their music has had a big influence on me. As much as I love the song, though, I had never even considered recording it until my producer, Tim Surrett (Balsam Range) asked me to listen to a cool, stripped-down acoustic version done by Gwyneth Paltrow on a soundtrack for the television show Glee. After I listened to that and started singing it with a little different vibe, it really felt like it fit me and would be great to include on the album. I’m really happy that Tim suggested recording ‘Landslide’ because it’s such a timeless song that is loved by people across generations and musical tastes and I’m so pleased with how the feel of the music and vocals came together. Speaking of vocals, my absolute favorite part of this recording is that one of my musical heroes – Mr. Vince Gill – joined me to sing harmony! Honestly, I don’t even have the words to convey how much it means to me that Vince agreed to sing on this song. What?!?!?! Vince Gill sang on my debut album…don’t even wake me up from that dream! Anyway, I do hope that everyone enjoys my cover of ‘Landslide’ — it’s an honor to have recorded this beloved song.”
