With roots in Alabama, Texas and Tennessee, JD Darling has always been surrounded and influenced by country music. On June 2 he will release his new album, Looking Forward Thinking Back, showcasing that relationship through his intimate and honest songwriting. One of those songs, and perhaps the perfect example of the album’s title, is “You Can Feel It” premiering today exclusively with The Country Note.
Rock paper scissors on a real big decision. Oh baby, you don’t want to choose all alone.
But, you had to feel it so you jumped up and you turned that ignition.
And you took off on your own.
The beach is colder than the city at midnight.
That’s where you’ll go to do your thinking.
I know you baby. Looking forward, you were coming to town.
Thinking back, you were only leaving.
You held on. You let go. I asked why. You said you didn’t know.
Kentucky runaway down in Tennessee, why you running from me?
“This one is really about me leaving a relationship in the past,” explains Darling. “I was going to give Los Angeles a shot for a while and told my girlfriend that I was going. Her response was “Yeah, that sounds like fun. Let’s do it.” A really uncomfortable conversation followed. The lyrics are written from her point of view — two sides to every story — but sung in first person so I don’t sound like such a jerk.”
