Experiences in life lead to the best songwriters, because they have the stories to tell.
Danny Worsnop has a few.
The England-born singer sat down with Chris Ramos of Sons of Lions and The Country Note at CRS 2026, and he did not waste time getting to the point. Asked what his deal is, Worsnop said he has dedicated his life to complaining through a myriad of different vehicles. The current one is a guitar and a microphone.
That current chapter did not start in Nashville. It started with a kid in England spending most of his early life trying to figure out a way to the United States. Then a heavy metal band asked him to join. He said no. They said please. He said no again. They said they were going to start it in America.
He said he was in.
That band was Asking Alexandria. Worsnop was 17 when he came to the States. He is 35 now. He did that world for a long time, and it was successful. Then he needed to get back to sitting with a guitar and a microphone and telling stories. That is what brought him here.
Going from metal to country is still the music business, but it is a leap. Different industry. Different fan base. Plenty of crossover, and still a whole new start.
“Ego-wise — which is a problem I’ve had throughout my life — it’s humbling,” Worsnop said. “But it also allows me to be hungry again. It’s easy once you get to a certain point to phone it in, and I think I probably did that towards the latter end of my career in rock music. This forced me to look internally and shift my whole perspective on everything. It made me fall in love with it again.”
The music has been a long time coming. His last record came out in 2019, and he has been working on the next one ever since. Then came a last-minute phone call while he was on tour: did he want RCA Studio? Yes. The only window was three days after he got back. He had not even shown the album to the band yet.
They pulled it together anyway. They cut the whole thing live in three days.
The album is not out yet. What is out is “Somewhere in the Middle,” a song Worsnop described as being about politics in a way that says the whole fight is stupid. Cities burning on the news. Sides that cannot win a game designed to lose. All he wants is a little land, a church pew, and enough faith to hold on to.
There is more to the picture than the songs. Worsnop co-founded Asesinato Tequila, and he will tell you it is the best tequila ever. I have tasted it, and I am with him. No mixers needed. Straight on ice was beyond delicious. At the time of the CRS conversation, he said the bottles that were in Tennessee were getting cleaned out at Nashville Whiskey House — so if you are local, that is the first place to look. Beyond Nashville, Asesinato is physically distributed in five states, with a heavier retail footprint in parts of Florida, North Carolina, and Alabama. If those shelves are not in reach, the brand ships to 37 states through select retailers, including Cost Plus Liquors, which carries expressions like the Reposado and Añejo Cristalino.
Ask him what people would not know about him, and he does not go to the résumé. He goes to church.
For a long time he was an adamant atheist. Then came what he calls atheist recovery, which is agnostic. He does not have a tidy rock-bottom testimony. He walked into a church, broke down every week, and said he was in.
“For everything I feel like I may have accomplished, everything ultimately gets credited to God and to Jesus,” he said. “The only purpose of my music now is to, in some small way, bring people a little bit closer and bring some light into people’s life on His behalf.”
