Listening to the instrumentation of Henhouse Prowlers‘ latest single “Subscription To Loneliness” instantly gets one into an uplifting mood, and then the mind recognizes the stories the lyrics are telling along with that up-tempo fiddle and mandolin. The 2023 IBMA New Artist of the Year nominee proves that sometimes you can’t always judge a book by its cover as they fool the listeners’ ears with this tale of cheating and break ups, with a bit of a smirk.
“Getting together with Rick Lang for our first (of now many) co-writing sessions, I brought this idea to the table,” says bassist Jon Goldfine. “I had a few verses written – each based on real relationships that I’d had as a much younger man. Rick being so great at what he does… he helped us find exactly what we wanted to capture in the song. A sad heartbreak story wrapped in a humorous, sort of tongue-in-cheek package.”
Subscription to loneliness
Heartache and emptiness
I never signed up for this … lonesome condition
My love’s headed down the track
I’m facing the cold hard facts
Can’t get my money back
Stuck with this subscription
Recently the Chicago based band headed into the studio to record the single’s official music video and were joined by the incredible Becky Buller and Laura Orshaw. Deciding to film a studio video for the track removed the typical music video “follow the plot” distraction and allows the listener to really pay attention to the incredible musicianship of each of these artists.
“Having Becky Buller and Laura Orshaw in the room while we were recording “Subscription” brought a whole new vibe, which was great considering it was right in the middle of the recording process,” explains Ben Wright, banjo extraordinaire and founding member of the Prowlers. “Up to that point we had hyper-analyzed every piece of that song and we had no idea what adding fiddles was going to do to it. All of a sudden, BOOM, there was this pronounced western-swing energy in the tune and it really brought it over the top for us.”
