Singer/songwriter Judy Paster’s ability to put words to song, delivering a message that can strike a cord with the listener in obvious and subconscious ways is what makes her one of Nashville’s best today. In her latest single “Chop Wood Carry Water,” written with fellow Nashville-Americana artist Boo Ray, the lyrics travel the full crossing from sad and hopeless to strength and peace – feelings that we all can relate to, whether its visible or an internal struggle.
“‘Chop Wood Carry Water’ will take listeners on a musical journey with a sad and difficult beginning but during the song, convey the powerful message – that if you stay in the moment and set your heart and mind on what’s right before you, you will get past the hardest and lowest points of life and find hope,” explains Paster. “It’s about the vulnerability of life (“without fear we’re naked in the moonlight”) and finding strength & peace within that vulnerability (“a brand new chance is coming with the sunrise, so chop wood carry water, we’ll be alright.”)”
It’s that “vulnerability of life” Paster centered on for the official music video, and how bringing us back to the beginning – our connection to nature – helps us cope and progress: “Hope often lives on the horizon, and I chose a cinematic yet simple backdrop for my video- to convey the profound yet simple beauty of nature, & doing the next right thing- against the complexity of life. It’s the simple tasks (like chopping wood & carrying water) that often help us greet a new day with peace & take courage for the future.”
The moving lyrics are supported by wisps of Bluegrass mixed with Country and Folk while the beautiful scenery, especially the colors of fall foliage, add to the dream-like vision.
