‘Invent a T-Shirt’ Debuts TODAY Accompanied
by Cheeky Official Lyric Video
Exclusive Feature in American Songwriter:
“‘Invent A T-Shirt’ feels like a breath of fresh air”
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Like her heroes, Roger Miller and Shel Silverstein, Nashville native Jenny Tolman loves poking fun in rhyme, and she doesn’t shy away from sensitive subjects. This time it’s the social media community Tolman is targeting with her latest single, “Invent A T-Shirt,” dropping today on all digital platforms HERE, with the help of global music solutions company ONErpm.
Teaming once again with GRAMMY® nominated producer Dave Brainard, Tolman delivers timely lyrics backed by Jerry Reed-esque guitar licks and a rolling train beat. In offering its exclusive premiere of the single and lyric video, American Songwriter says, “The emerging artist’s humor and candor prove her wise beyond her 24 years as she connects with a broad audience with an urgent message.” Tolman told the publication, “I began to think if I can make people laugh, which is what I love most, I can make them feel comfortable. And then once they’re comfortable, they’re way more open to listening to what you have to say and the actual message of the song.”
Yeah freedom of speech, it must’ve been
Made up back when there was common sense
Cause common sense ain’t trending much these days
Our sense of humor is getting neglected
All the good jokes are politically corrected
If I could invent a t-shirt this is what it’d say…
I hate haters
I love lovers
And I don’t really care about people who don’t really care
I hate haters
I love lovers
And you’re free to kiss, or not kiss, my derrière
Tolman, who the Tennessean named an “Artist to Watch in 2020,” says she wrote ‘Invent a T-Shirt’ with Brainard and Bill Whyte “because we all need to stick a pin in our tension balloons and take a second to laugh at ourselves.” She pauses before adding, “I’ve never gotten too into politics, as I like to take the WWDD (What Would Dolly Do) approach, but I felt like someone needed to come out and say, ‘HOLD UP! We have all gone a little crazy, and that’s OK, but let’s just acknowledge it and stop being jerks to each other, please!’”
