For years, The Southern Gothic have released music that explored the space between alternative rock, country and folk, while building a following on their stellar live show and the distinctive growl of frontman/songwriter, Connor Christian. On the band’s newest EP, Burnin Moonlight, Christian has found some new ground to cover, and in doing so, a new place to explore – the studio.
“In the past, the songs have grown up on the road, and when we got to the studio, they were fully formed pieces, forged from hundreds of performances. On this record, the songs all I went in with an iPhone worktape, and got to sit down with some really talented people and experiment, which was a new and really exciting experience for me in music making”.
“Classic is a song that I wrote pretty early on in my time here in Nashville. It was a hard lesson too. My publisher told me that Tim McGraw and Faith Hill were looking for songs for an upcoming duets album. Knowing that they were kind of country music’s “Classic” couple, Mason (Thornley, co-writer) and I wrote this song with them in mind, and tried to write to that feeling of invincibility a relationship can have after you’ve been through it all and come out the other side scarred but stronger. Lo and behold, we got a call that Tim and Faith had put this one on hold, my first big hold as a Nashville songwriter. Of course I had zero cool and told EVERYONE. Well, that was 4 years ago and you may have noticed that they never did cut the song after all. Lesson learned I hope. On the bright side the song WAS cut twice, once by an American artist and once by an Aussie. Both artists brought their own spin to the song, but I still hadn’t heard it the way I envisioned it, so I felt like we had to record my version and release it on Burnin’ Moonlight, and I’m quite glad we did, I love our version – instant “Classic”. “
