They say you can’t always judge a book by its cover and that’s just what Heidi Raye is trying to figure out in her new song “Junkyard,” which just passed 119,000 streams on Spotify’s official New Boots playlist this week. The song impacted country radio on February 19, the same day Raye debuted the fun, quirky music video.
Appropriately shot in an abandoned junkyard, among rusty, nostalgic pickup trucks Raye asks the “too good to be true” man in question – what are you hiding?
You look too good, you say all the right things
You gotta big job, gotta it all and you’re into me
Seem like a 10, you might be a 2
And I know how to pick ’em, so tell me what’s wrong with you
Whatcha got in the junkyard?
Just a little rusted, broken-down, busted
Too many miles on used parts
Always up and runnin’, 99 to nothin’
Been around the block, wreckin’ sweethearts
Boy it ain’t that hard
Tell me what you got in the junkyard
Raye’s warm and friendly personality comes through as do her powerful vocals with a sweet touch of twang. Oh and she has quite the cute sidekick. Meet Alpha the alpaca. Check out the video below:
Once Raye completed her degree in nursing at UNBC, the British Columbia native made her way to Nashville in 2010 and hit the pavement, looking to write with anyone in Music City who would give a talented newcomer a chance. After a bit of a rollercoaster ride, Raye signed on as a staff writer at Harlan Howard Songs and has been writing with Music Row veterans the likes of Craig Wiseman, Liz Rose and more. As a performer, she has opened for country megastars including Kenny Chesney, Jason Aldean, Randy Travis, Reba McEntire, Terri Clark, and Ronnie McDowell.
“Junkyard” is featured on Raye’s EP Worth A Shot, released July 2017. (And yes, that is Alpha on the song’s artwork)
