You may know Emile Hirsch, the actor. Now meet Emile Hirsch, the musician. Thanks to the role of Martin in last year’s All Nighter, Hirsch and fellow musicians Chris Sayre and Brian Cohen (the trio met to compose the film’s music) have formed the “not-quite-roots and not-quite-pop” group Hysterical Kindess. Yesterday, they released the track “The Best Men” ahead of their debut project Simple Things which is due out on June 1.
The track is catchy with its rhythmic banjo picking, keys, and background clapping brought together by Hirsch’s unique spoken word style. The bluegrass touch is complete with a killer harmonica solo about two-thirds into the song.
“Music gives me the same satisfaction I get from acting, the same kind of catharsis,” Hirsch recently said in a press release. “Yet, it’s still engaging with the creativity of writing a screenplay or a novel. It combines those pursuits in a very effective way.” Or, as he sings on the title track: “They please me, all these simple things. They free my mind and let me be.”
