In 2016, Chandler Stephens filmed a group of videos of some of her favorite cover songs. When asked which ones she wanted to do “Humble and Kind” written by Lori McKenna and performed by Tim McGraw was at the top of the list.
“Humble and Kind is just such an extremely well written song with such a timeless message. The first time I heard Tim McGraw’s version, it stopped me in my tracks. As a songwriter you hope you can write one of those types of songs that has a message that pierces the heart of everyone who hears it.” Chandler goes on to explain, “Coming from a large family of 16 that includes 14 adopted siblings from a variety of ethnicities and with an extremely wide range of personalities, being humble and kind as well as understanding, loving, and helpful was a must in our house growing up. I think for that reason this song gives me a feeling of love, family, and unity.”
For a throwback Thursday post on social media in June this year, Chandler re-shared the “Humble and Kind” video. The emails and messages about her version of this song poured in. It was at the urging of so many fans that Chandler decided to release her version to all of the digital streaming platforms. A particularly touching message came from a teacher in California who had her students collaborating on a Google 2020 End of Year slide show of their time in quarantine and distance learning and wanted to use Chandler’s version of “Humble and Kind” during the slide show. This teacher felt like it made sense during these uncertain times also to tell the students to be humble and kind, and she loved Chandler’s version so much that she thought this version would especially speak to her students.
In an unplanned but greatly inspired move, Chandler’s version of “Humble and Kind” hits all digital streaming platforms today, 9/18. Chandler is currently in the middle of releasing songs from her new EP, having released the first single from the project,” Boys of Summer,” in June of this year. Expect a new song entitled “Bet on You” that Chandler co-wrote with Kyle Rife to be coming in October. This heartfelt autobiographical tale of her move to Nashville, is truly a guide book for anyone struggling with whether to make the leap of following their dreams or not.
