Lead singer of the bluegrass band Mountain Heart, Josh Shilling has been going through 2020 like the rest of us. And just like us, he has had thoughts and feelings and emotions about all that has been going on over the past 7 months. Then one day, those thoughts and feelings and emotions came spilling out of him onto paper, creating what would become his first solo release in several years. Everything about the track is relatable, including its title: a phrase that many of us probably have said either aloud or under our breath at some point or another this year: “(Go To Hell) 2020.”
“This song wrote itself,” says Shilling. “I jotted it down on paper in minutes while waiting for a Skype writing session to start with another writer. It felt like a personal and heavy conversation with an old confidant. I was positive this would impact people. Each verse is something I’ve faced personally since Spring regarding the pandemic, societal unrest, facing loss and grief, and relationship tension throughout 2020. The chorus provides hope and belief that life will get better and “someday soon we’ll be free and this will be in the rear view.” The song is where I am; it’s where I think we all are right now. No tricks, no big production, this was a live take, 3 chords and the truth… the truth for everyone, I think.”
