“This song is an anthem for women.”- Katie Cole
Being in touch with your fans is something that all musicians need to do – some do ok, while some do it really well. Alt-country Nashville-based, Australian-born Katie Cole is one of the later. Her upcoming album River Flow is possible because of her Kickstarter campaign that fans flocked to in order to bring this album to life. Today she’s releasing “Short Story Long,” a previously unreleased song based on the reaction by her fans during her live performance.
“This is one of the first songs I felt I was ready to pen in this tone of writing,” says Cole. “A lot of my songs over the last 2 or 3 years tend be a little left of field emotionally. Essentially things I’ve had trouble expressing previously, or topics, I was ashamed or felt were too deep or dark to tackle. Much like how my song Broke from “Things That Break Pt1.” was a light hearted way of saying “you can get past this”.. this song is a fun way of dealing with a break up. This is about a relationship that is being stretched out by your partner…and you wanting to just end it. Rather than it being a long story short (which we are all familiar with the phrase)… this one is asking your partner “why are you making this short story long”. So it’s a play on words. People that see me play live see that I have a lighter side with my stage banter and the way I tell stories in-between songs… so it’s nice to be able to add an uptempo song to my sets where I can say something funny and then play this song and not some crushing ballad. Haha.”
