All last week Kelly Clarkson had taken to her Facebook page with up-to-the-minute details on an upcoming project – within these cryptic videos were performances of cover songs and every time she went live, she left her fans confused and eager to find out what she’s been up to.
Then on June 23, Clarkson broke the news that she is no longer with RCA Records, a label she’s been with since winning American Idol, and has signed with Atlantic Records for a worldwide multi-year deal.
So, just what did the cover songs have to do with the secret? Her first album with Atlantic will consist of nothing but cover tunes. The Soul/R&B influenced album, which is slated for release sometime in 2017, was something she’s always wanted to do. Clarkson is also planning to release free downloads each month on her website. To start this news on the right foot, four covers were made available for immediate download: Coldplay’s “Fix You,” Radiohead’s “Creep,” Etta James’ “I’d Rather Go Blind” and India Arie’s “Ready for Love”.
But will there be a country album? According to Clarkson, she’s stated that “it is a possibility down the road!”
