Legendary Southern Rock Group Comes Full-circle with Visits to Macon’s Capricorn Records and Grant’s Lounge,
where the Marshall Tucker Story Began 46 Years Ago
Nashville, Tenn. — The Marshall Tucker Band (MTB) recently performed live in Macon and Atlanta as part of the revived Georgia Jam concert series where they were joined by Allman Brothers original member Jaimoe (Jaimoe’s Jasssz Band) for standing room only shows at Macon’s Capitol Cox Theatre and Atlanta’s Variety Playhouse. In Macon, the MTB was honored for their impact on the local music scene, while Jaimoe was presented with the Harriett Tubman Medal of Freedom.
While in Macon, The Marshall Tucker Band paid a special visit to a half-century old recording studio where the band’s career was established in the early 1970s. It was Capricorn Records where the MTB recorded its first demo in 1972, effectively jump starting the band’s career. During the visit, MTB lead singer Doug Gray walked the halls, corridors, and studios of the facility, retracing his steps from the early days of the band’s musical journey. Gray and members of the band also visited nearby Grant’s Lounge, a staple of the Macon music scene where the group performed in the 1970s.
“Going back to Capricorn and Grant’s Lounge flooded me with memories,” says Gray. “If not for those two music establishments in Macon, The Marshall Tucker Band probably wouldn’t exist today.”
During the MTB’s visit to Capricorn and Grant’s Lounge (both located on the campus of Mercer University), Gray was presented with a plaque commemorating the band’s longstanding history with the area.
“The best part of life is to feel loved and appreciated and never expecting to be recognized for any of the talents that you are blessed with,” explains Gray. “During our visit, Jaimoe and I were both given that respect. Over the last 46 years, we’ve played many shows with him. Earlier this month, Jaimoe with his Jasssz Band and The Marshall Tucker Band were both in Macon and Atlanta together playing the Georgia Jam which is gaining momentum with every turn. Our booking agency, APA, and our management company, Red Light, as well as Mercer University, have turned a new leaf in our musical career and are doing so with musicians everywhere. We’ve never been more excited about the future!”
