Record Store Day – a day to celebrate the world’s independent record stores as vinylphiles line up around the block for the chance to shop for (or in some cases fight over) special releases of vinyl records ranging from limited edition re-releases to new live albums, singles, picture discs, previously unreleased demos, and more – was set to celebrate its 13th year on April 18th but, Corona.
They then planned on June 20, but still, Corona.
So the powers that be had to adapt to this new social-distanced society and figure out a way to still get music lovers their fix, and they decided on having 3 RSD Drops – the first being tomorrow, August 29, followed by September 26 and October 24.
As everything isn’t how it once was, your best bet if you are planning on heading out to your local record store is to call ahead and see what their protocols are to keep everyone safe. As stated on RSD’s official website, “Stores have been working hard to figure out the best way to handle things. Every store has a different situation– space, staff, local mandates, fires, hurricanes, 2020 in general. So be patient, follow the rules they’ve set out and be nice– to them and each other.”
And it doesn’t hurt to ask if the store has what you are looking for (some stores are helpful that way) as that will also help with the number of people showing up.
Some of the country selections on this year’s list features k.d. lang (8/29), Midland (8/29), Hank Williams (9/26) and Johnny Cash (10/24). For a full list of RSD releases, click here.
