Rich Murray Tributes Townes Van Zandt

Listen here

Americana / Outlaw Country / Bluesman Rich Murray is set to release a new single which is a cover of a Townes Van Zandt tune titled “White Freightliner Blues”. Murray co-produced the track with Indiana native Dane Clark. Mr. Clark is the longtime drummer for John Mellencamp. He also provided the rock-solid drums on this track. The production team had a sound in mind for this song and the recruiting went as follows. The lead guitar track was laid down by Bill Kirchen aka “the king of dieselbilly guitar.” Mr. Kirchen’s guitar work was first noticed on the 1972 hit track “Hot Rod Lincoln” when he was a member of Commander Cody and The Lost Planet Airmen. His sound was dubbed as dieselbilly and it has a very driving, distinct telecaster tone, later imitated, but never exactly duplicated by others.

Murray provided the bass guitar, acoustic guitar, and lead vox on this track. The accordion track, which gives it a slightly Cajun zydeco feel, was provided by Troye Kinnett, who is also a member of the Mellencamp band. The harmony vox was laid down by Murray’s longtime friend, Jack R. Fields. Mr. Fields passed away shortly after the recording of this track. He also sang harmony parts on the previously released tracks mentioned below. White Freightliner Blues was recorded at Dane Clarks Thunder Sound Studio. The track is currently being promoted to Americana and college radio and is expected to reach Major Market Radio in the 3rd quarter of this year. Previous releases from this production team include two of Murray’s original songs, “Down the Road”, “Are We There Yet”, and “I’m Gone, Raisin’ Hillbilly Hell”.
