Shelby Lee Lowe takes a modern look at traditional country on his new EP Something In Me. Dropping on October 16, Something In Me is currently available for pre-order on iTunes and can be pre-saved/pre-added by clicking here. Produced by Andrew Scott Wills, the three-track EP gives fans a look into Lowe’s ability to create his own lane of country rooted in the classic sounds of the Bakersfield era.
“Each song feels like something that represents my influences and my brand of country music,” says Shelby. “Andy and I talked about this project having a traditional, honky-tonk country sound that was similar to records we loved from the 70s, 80s and 90s by artists like Merle Haggard, Dwight Yoakam, Johnny Lee and Ronnie Milsap. We wanted twangy Telecaster Guitars, and a heavy dose of steel guitar and keys. With all of my shows getting cancelled this spring and summer, I decided to focus all of my energy on making this EP. When I wrote Something in Me, with my producer Andrew Scott Wills and Rick Huckaby, it was even via a zoom call during quarantine. That song felt so good from the first time we played it. My team and I have worked hard to make every song special, along with the artwork created by artist Isaac Denton. These are three of my favorite songs I’ve ever recorded, and I can’t wait to share them with the world.”
Something In Me includes the lead single Could’ve Fooled Me written by Shelby Lee Lowe, David Ross (Music Row Magazine Founder) and Andrew Scott Wills (Jerrod Niemann, Lucas Hoge & Stephanie Quayle). This single puts a new twist on the classic country barroom romance that serves as a core storyline for the genre. Being involved for a while, two lovers find it difficult to maintain the blurred line of being “just friends.”
“Andy came in with the title and I thought there’s an idea I hadn’t heard before,” recalls Shelby. “I wanted a love song that had angst where the girl wasn’t that serious about the relationship. I’ve certainly been on both sides of this relationship before.”
Shelby took the time in quarantine to focus on songwriting spending a lot of time on zoom co-writing with Rick Huckaby (“Beer With Jesus” by Thomas Rhett & “Muddy Water” Trace Adkins), songwriter/producer Andrew Scott Wills (“Blue Bandana” Jerrod Niemann & “Selfish” by Stephanie Quayle) as well as tunesmith and Music Row Magazine founder David Ross.
