“Skip Ewing Paints a Scenic Picture with ‘Road to California’”
– American Songwriter
Nashville, Tenn. — Country artist and critically acclaimed songwriter Skip Ewing has released his most vulnerable piece of work to date in his new album, Road to California, available today, April 26, 2024. The new album, co-produced by Skip and Kyle Lehning, embraces musical diversity and lyrical depth, encompassing humor, grit, heartbreak, devotion, poeticism, and authenticity. Every song on the album was written solely by Skip, with the exception of the final track, “Not Afraid of Love,” a co-write with Wayne Kirkpatrick (Garth Brooks, Eric Clapton, Faith Hill). For Skip, the world is his canvas, and the groundbreaking singer/songwriter is reveling in his latest creative adventures. Listen to Road to California here.
“When audiences are given the opportunity to hear what I do, we make a connection. I want to take the listener on a journey. I want them to listen and be surprised. Maybe they’ll find something that validates their existence. Hopefully they’ll find something nourishing. In any case as long as they’re listening I’ll do my best to offer them a meaningful journey,” Skip shared.
This album opens with the fiery “Wreck of My Heart” that details a near-fatal accident that Skip experienced. The cautionary, yet somewhat unpreventable event is just one example of how the decorated songwriter uses his real life experiences to create memorable storylines, a theme which is also prevalent on songs such as “Wag More” and “Windmill.” The vulnerable and intuitive lyrics set the stage for Skip’s testimony of true love in “Always You” and on the opposite end of the spectrum, the painful journey love can take in “The Highway Won” and the title track “Road To California.” The album also features Skip’s current radio single “Road Dog.” Inspired by Ewing’s beloved dog Shotgun, the official “Road Dog” (Radio Mix) music video features hundreds of other furry friends submitted by Ewing’s fans across the country. Road To California concludes with the optimistic “Not Afraid To Love,” a celebration of the courage and resiliency of the human heart.
The variety of subjects encapsulated on Road To California speak to Ewing’s versatility as an artist and as a songwriter who has had songs recorded by Kenny Chesney, Shania Twain, George Strait, Keb Mo, Willie Nelson, Keith Urban, and numerous others. Most recently, his song “I Would If I Could,” co-written with Dean Dillon, has been brought to the spotlight and taken on new life with two of the most successful artists of the past few years. Reigning CMA Entertainer of the Year Lainey Wilson recorded a ‘Lost’ version of the song in December as part of Apple Music’s Lost & Found project, spotlighting Nashville songwriters by showcasing some of the best country tracks that have never been released. Prominent artist and songwriter ERNEST also recorded a version, this time as a duet with Wilson that is featured on his brand new album, NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE. The song’s discovery has earned praise from Music Row, American Songwriter, Holler and many more.
With the release of Road To California, Skip continues to cement himself as one of the most talented country music singer/songwriters of our generation. Armed with innovative lyrics, powerful vocals and an exceptional musical panorama, Skip’s music continues to reach new heights and resonate with audiences far and wide.
