NASHVILLE, Tenn. — We’ve heard the songs about the guy looking good across the bar and the toned guy in his muscle tee. We’ve heard about the girls in their cutoff shorts and presumed they are riding shotgun sidled up to toned guys in their muscle tees. But we haven’t heard the song about the average guy whose workouts get away from him. The guy who likes beer and frozen pizza, or perhaps just hanging out with his wife and kiddos, better than trying to look good for the ladies. Not, at least, until today.
Nashville singer-songwriter Sophie Sanders gives us “Dad Bod,” an ever so catchy anthem for all the lovably less toned guys out there, available today on Spotify and Apple Music. The single comes on the heels of her Valentine’s Day release, “All My Friends Are Married,” and shines with all the quirk and pizzazz of a song not soon to be forgotten.
“I’m feelin’ pretty lucky every time he loves me; I don’t need no Greek god, my baby’s got a dad bod,” Sanders sings. She was joking around when she wrote it, but upon sharing it with a few people she realized the words were relatable and spoke to a theme not often sung about.
Sanders got the idea when she overheard a fit guy at the pool joke to his friends that girls liked him a whole lot better when he had a dad bod. The light bulb went off, and she knew a song had been born. She penned the track alone and credits Paul Sikes, the producer, for the way it turned out just shy of obnoxiously catchy. “He always knows right where to take a feeling, no matter how off the wall that feeling may be,” she says.
With “Dad Bod,” Sanders hopes to put a little lightheartedness into a world that seems, lately, full of bad news. “I considered rescheduling this release after the Nashville tornado, and with the coronavirus leaving so many of us cooped up and anxious at home,” she says. “There are all these heavy things happening. Does anyone really care to listen to some silly song about a dad bod?”
But Sanders hopes it will provide comic relief in a time when it feels like we need something to laugh about. “We need some light and some humor,” she says. “And maybe more than anything we need music.” Look for more music from Sanders in the coming months.
