New Single Available Today
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Sophie Sanders sings to her special somebody in “Nobody Special,” out today on Spotify and Apple Music. The release comes on the heels of the Nashville singer-songwriter’s engagement to musician beau, Grant Geertsma, whom she credits with inspiring the words.
“When you think you’re nobody special that nobody sees…remember that of all of the billions of people down here dying to dream their dreams / there’s nobody special as you are to me,” she sings.
Sanders got the idea for the title from a personality test the couple took together. “Through counseling and reading, we’ve learned a lot about the Enneagram,” she says of a model based on nine types of people that has recently become popular. “I’m a type four and, somewhere beneath layers of self-doubt and feelings of inadequacy, I tend to tell myself I’m special. My fiance is a type nine, and he tells himself the opposite, that he is nobody special,” she says.
Sanders wrote the song alone one afternoon after pondering how different their inner monologues are. “The phrase ‘nobody special’ kept running around in my head, and I quickly discovered I could twist it into a positive with a little word play,” she says. Soon after its completion, she sent the song over to Paul Sikes for production. She hopes it speaks to anyone who has momentarily forgotten their worth, no matter his or her personality type or knowledge of the Enneagram.
Despite thinking of the track, personally, as her fiance’s song, Sanders says she was encouraging herself with the words just as much. She says that trying to make it as a songwriter in Nashville and being surrounded by so many talented people triggers her own self-doubt and feelings of irrelevance all the time. “In a way, I think we creatives are all constantly trying to believe that we’re special. That we have what it takes to make it even though we inevitably can’t all,” she says. Although her subconscious may tell her she’s different or unique, the day-to-day task of trying to make it in music feels like an uphill internal battle to prove that the deep down thought could possibly be true. “For every moment of confidence and every yes I can do this day, there is a day of I don’t matter, why am I even trying.’”
But as she sings to her fiance, and as she sings to herself, “There’s nobody special, no nobody special as you / and I’m gonna tell ya / ‘till you’re telling yourself it’s true.”
“Nobody Special” marks Sanders’ final planned release in a series of singles this year. As far as what’s next for her, she says it’s keeping on writing and trying to find inspiration in a world that’s twisting and turning every which way lately. Oh, and planning a wedding with that special somebody.
