“a supercharged distorted rocker…Judging by the pulsing, electronic vibe of ‘Sing Along’ and how Simpson has previously described the album (‘a sleazy, steamy rock n roll record), Sound & Fury is far removed from any of the country stylings that informed his past work…” – Rolling Stone
“If Sturgill Simpson seemed an unlikely country star before…wait until you hear what he’s got planned next….The first single from Sound & Fury, ‘Sing Along’, is a dizzying and compact rock-and-roll jam” – NPR
“…a four-on-the-floor slice of retrowave rock” – USA TODAY
GRAMMY Award winner Sturgill Simpson has announced plans for a special underplay tour to benefit the Special Forces Foundation, kicking off at the legendary Troubadour in West Hollywood, CA, on September 29. The limited run of dates comes on the heels of the simultaneous release of his much-anticipated album and Netflix anime film of the same name, “SOUND & FURY,” available everywhere on September 27. The album – arriving via Elektra Records – is available for pre-order now.
Hitting six cities on both coasts, 100% of the net proceeds from the shows are being donated to the Special Forces Foundation, a non-profit organization that provides immediate and ongoing support to Army Special Forces soldiers, “Green Berets,” and their families. Stops include Terrapin Crossroads in San Rafael, CA (October 1), The Independent in San Francisco, CA (October 2), Music Hall Of Williamsburg in Brooklyn, NY (October 6), Black Cat in Washington, DC (October 7), and Stone Pony in Asbury Park, NJ (October 8). Tickets go on sale on Wednesday, September 25, at 10am local. For more information, please visit www.sturgillsimpson.com.
A recent Gold Star – a family member who has lost a loved one in military service – shares: “After the life shattering knock on my door, it was the SFF that allowed me to take a breath again. They did and continued to do so. They became more than just a helping hand, but family that truly has our best interest at heart. My family and I could never have gotten through this time without them.”
To herald the arrival of “SOUND & FURY,” Simpson has scheduled a pair of theatrical screenings at The ArcLight Cinema in Hollywood, CA, on September 26, and the IFC Theater in New York City, NY, on October 3. As a thank-you to fans, all pre-orders of the “SOUND & FURY” album via the Sturgill Simpson official webstore include an invitation to attend one of these special events on a first come, first served basis. Additionally, in-store purchases of the album at Amoeba Music in Hollywood on September 26 will receive a wristband guaranteeing entrance to a 5pm signing with Simpson, and to the screening that evening at The ArcLight Cinema. In addition to The New York Times’ profile of Simpson in yesterday’s Sunday Arts & Leisure section, “SOUND & FURY” has already been named one of fall’s most anticipated albums by New York magazine, Billboard, and more. “SOUND & FURY” is preceded by lead single “Sing Along,” available now at all DSPs HERE. The official music video for “Sing Along” – streaming now at Simpson’s official YouTube channel – was directed by Japanese anime legend Jumpei Mizusaki, and offers a preview of the forthcoming film, which is set entirely to music from the full album with a different anime segment for each individual song. Watch HERE. All album pre-orders include an instant download of “Sing Along.”
Produced by Simpson, “SOUND & FURY,” the album, was recorded primarily at the McGuire Motor Inn in Waterford, Michigan, with his bandmates Bobby Emmett, Chuck Bartels, Miles Miller, who all serve as co-producers along with GRAMMY nominee John Hill (Cage The Elephant, Portugal. The Man, Bleachers). The album – which Simpson describes as “a sleazy, steamy rock n roll record” – is a marked departure from 2016’s acclaimed “A Sailor’s Guide To Earth,” which won “Best Country Album” and was nominated for “Album of the Year” at the 59th GRAMMY Awards. Merging American rock music and Japanese animation in a revolutionary new way, “SOUND & FURY,” the film, was produced and based on a story by Simpson entitled “Sound & Fury.” Featuring some of the biggest names in the genre, the film was written and directed by Jumpei Mizusaki, founder of renowned animation studio Kamikaze Douga and director for the animated film, “Batman Ninja,” while Takashi Okazaki, creator of Japanese manga series “Afro Samurai,” served as the film’s character designer. Additional directors include Koji Morimoto of Phy (“AKIRA”) / Griot Groove, Michael Arias (“Tekkonkinkreet”), Masaru Matsumoto of Grayscale Arts (“Starship Troopers: Traitors of Mars”), Henry Thurlow and Arthell Isom of D’ART Shtajio (“Indigo Ignited, XOgenaSYS”). Shunsuke Ochiai is co-executive producer. Hiroaki Takeuchi is production executive (“The Animatrix”)
“SOUND & FURY” is Simpson’s fourth full length release following his self-produced, GRAMMY® Award-winning 2016 album, “A Sailor’s Guide To Earth” which garnered rave reviews from The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, NPR Music, Rolling Stone, Stereogum, Pitchfork, Salon, Billboard, The Atlantic, Paste, SPIN, American Songwriter among many others. Simpson brought his electrifying live show to the small screen with nationally televised performances on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” “The Daily Show with Trevor Noah,” “Conan,” “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” “Late Night with Seth Meyers,” and, most memorably, on “Saturday Night Live” and the 59th GRAMMY Awards telecast. Earlier this year, Simpson unveiled a brand new track “The Dead Don’t Die,” the original theme song for the acclaimed film of the same name, written and directed by Jim Jarmusch.
