Hosts Craig Havighurst and Amy Alvey play old-time, bluegrass
and traditional roots weekly, starting Saturday, March 5 at 9 am
WMOT 89.5 FM is proud to announce the launch of the new weekly show The Old Fashioned, the station’s first-ever bluegrass and old-time program. This Saturday morning/Tuesday night happy hour of string band and folk music, co-hosted by WMOT’s Craig Havighurst and old-time fiddler and songwriter Amy Alvey, premieres Saturday, March 5 at 9 am.
As they say on the air, The Old Fashioned (yes, named for the world-famous cocktail) stirs up strong spirits with a bit of sugar, a dash of bitters, and a twist of zest, telling the ongoing story of traditional music in Americana. With commentary and context to bring their listeners along for the journey, Craig and Amy spin old-time bands, traditional bluegrass, regional folk styles, acoustic blues, and gospel.
Most of the music you’ll hear comes from new releases and recent live performances by today’s most intriguing recording and touring artists, with enough re-issues and historic tracks to keep you in touch with the music’s legacy. That includes tapping into WMOT’s special access to the Center for Popular Music at Middle Tennessee State University and its in-house label Spring Fed Records. Craig and Amy also plan to host live tapings in Nashville with performances by leading traditional artists.
Amy Alvey, a singer, songwriter, and fiddler, is half of the long-touring duo Golden Shoals. She’s a graduate of the Berklee College of Music, but her real education came from the nation’s many old-time festivals and fiddle conventions. Craig Havighurst, a veteran writer, producer, and broadcaster, has been telling roots music stories since 1998. He’s been WMOT’s producer of music news, and interview show The String since 2016. He’s an alum of the board of the International Bluegrass Association and a three-time nominee for IBMA Awards, including one win for best liner notes.
