As we remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our Freedom this Memorial Day, Tim Atwood‘s new single “I’ll Stand Up and Say So” will resonate with many. The first single from his upcoming third solo album Livin’ The Dream, Atwood began performing the patriotic song last year in response to the protests occurring during the playing of our National Anthem. While this father of a Purple Heart Army veteran recognizes that our Constitution protects the rights of those who wish to kneel, he personally will stand and honor the flag, his country and the service men and women “who can no longer stand for themselves due to injury or death.”
The song is so moving that after a show in the summer of 2017, a woman gave Atwood a bracelet that was very near and dear to her. So much so that it never left her arm in 26 years. The silver- toned cuff was a memorial bracelet she wore in honor of of Captain William D. Grimm, a U.S. Airman killed in action during Operation Desert Storm. This patriotic stranger was Stacy Britton, a U.S. Air Force veteran herself, who felt that Atwood was the correct person to not only pass on the bracelet to but that it was time for him to share “Captain Grimm’s memory with the world.”
A member of the U.S. Air Force Special Operations Command, Captain William D. Grimm served during Operation Desert Storm as navigator for Spirit 03. On January 31, 1991, twelve days into battle, the crew of Spirit 03 received a distress call from U.S. Marines on the ground as they were returning back to the ship after a successful nighttime flight over Kuwait. Spirit 03 headed towards the Marines for support. At dawn and under heavy fire, the visible Spirit 03 was able to destroy the enemy missile battery and rescued the Marines. However, after being hit by an Iraqi surface-to-air missile, all fourteen crew members of the Spirit 03 perished in what was to be the largest single loss by any Air Force unit during Operation Desert Storm.
At only 28 years old, Capt. Grimm was posthumously awarded the Silver Star Medal for his act of heroism in combat.
Britton attended the Memorial service for the fallen airmen, which was held at Hurlburt Field AFB in Ft. Walton Beach, FL. , where she was stationed with the First Operations Wing. When Britton realized that there was only one memorial bracelet left unclaimed by friends or family – that of Captain William D. Grimm – she claimed it and vowed to wear it forever.
And she did. And now Tim Atwood does.
