Big Machine Label Group’s newcomer Brett Young’s single “Sleep Without You” hit country radio running and is only gaining speed, showing us that California can not only do country, but do it well.
In a time when woman of country music are speaking out against the cumbersome generalization of women in country music (“Girl in a Country Song”, anybody?), Young’s fresh perspective is highly welcomed – speaking about a modern woman who doesn’t lose herself just because she’s in love, she can go out and have fun without her man and he loves her more for it. Instead of recording another love song dragging on about being inseparable, Young mixes it up with this track about a more realistic relationship – it’s not overly sexy, but more of an everyday type of love song. :
“I ain’t lying, saying have a good time,
go out with the girls and do what you do.
No matter how late, baby I’ll be staying up.
I can’t sleep without you.”
With a progressive sound similar to contemporaries such as Thomas Rhett and Brett Eldredge, “Sleep Without You” is country at heart but possess’ notes of other genres mixed as well – attributing his soulful attitude to his musical inspirations Al Green, Van Morrison, and Marvin Gaye, the listener is serenaded with a soulfulness that is refreshing and mixes well with the pop-country melody.
