When Louisiana native Bryan Martin‘s TikTok video of “Beauty In The Struggle” went viral – earning over 13 million streams and 2 million views – it was just the start he needed. Music has always been a part of Martin’s childhood as his mother sang with traditional country artists Faron Young, Allison Krauss, and David Houston, and while this Cherokee Indigenous American country singer-songwriter started writing as a hobby, it soon became the main focus of Martin’s. His growing talent in the craft was discovered by his mother, who then had him performing at local fairs and festivals.
His love for writing music followed him through high school and beyond, amassing a catalog of songs well over 300,000. These songs include several styles of country; traditional, southern rock, country gospel, and outlaw country – all showcased on his sophomore album Self Inflicted Scars, out now.
The album’s tracks were cultivated from the ups and downs of Martin’s life. In his words “I’ve seen the deepest, darkest days and every time I’ve hit rock bottom I learned more about myself and life”. Such as the title track “Self Inflicted Scars” which takes the listener down the road where one night stands, old guitars, and poor choices, are references to his self-inflicted scars.
Another telltale number is “Lost“ as its haunting vocals and eerie melodic production portrays a lost soul reminiscing of lost days filled with alcohol and drugs to sobriety and the path it took to get there.
Self Inflicted Scars also has a softer, more organic side; like that of the album’s single “Beauty In The Struggle” as it paints the picture of a perfect woman, a woman who’s unassuming nature is the light in his world, his everything. (A second version in track 12 has added Craig Campbell.) Then there’s the in-between tunes, ramping up the fun with “Over Hank It” – a total crowd pleaser featuring Colt Ford. This up-tempo, two-toe stepping number pays homage to the country outlaw himself, Hank Williams. The mix of Martin and his twang with the country rap styles of Ford will be a huge crowd pleaser.
Mid-album you’ll find a Toby Keith styled patriotic anthem called “Divided States,” an intriguing tune wrapped up with steady guitar, pointing out the political troubles that divide us. “Everyone’s An Outlaw,” the latest single, is a edgy rock number steeped in heavy guitar and steady beat, while Martin’s vocals turn more rough while preaching toughness, standing firm on what you believe in.
This album shows not only the differing styles of country, it showcases Martin’s songwriting coupled with spot on production, creating a perfect summer album.
