Carly Pearce’s debut album Every Little Thing (Big Machine Records) brought the spotlight to the Kentucky native with the title track being certified GOLD, making her the only solo female in 2017 with a country debut single to do so. Her follow up, “Hide the Wine” could keep her there although the two songs show complete opposite sides of her personality.
“Hide The Wine” is a sultry, playful song about an old flame returning to rekindle the fire, if only for one night. It’s a song people can relate to who have had one glass too many and find themselves thinking about someone who may not really be right for them but could be good for them right now with regrets afterward.
The song, written by Luke Laird, Ashley Gorley and Hillary Lindsey, was actually on hold for another artist when she first heard it. Once that artist decided it not to record it for their album, it was all Carly’s. The lyrics provide the perfect showcase for Pearce’s bluegrass twang.
Oh knock-knock, here you come a-knockin’ on my door
But you’re gonna have to wait another minute on the porch
Oh no, no, it’s a dangerous thing pouring alcohol on an old flame
Hide the wine
And get it gone
Oh I better hide every one of them records that turn me on (lock ‘um up, lock ‘um up)
Turn up the lights
And kill the mood
Oh ’cause baby I just don’t trust myself with you
I better hide the wine
Oh I better hide the wine, yeah
Oh I better hide the wine
While many can relate to the sentiment of the song, the video brings full body to the playfulness of the moment. Pearce is in the forest, seductively seated then dancing on a table pouring out glasses of wine, with her ghostly figure of a suitor searching from tree to tree finding only empty bottles. Seems Pearce may be winning this dangerous game.
