Having secured a certified-platinum selling single (“Wasting All These Tears”), chart-topping album (FRAME BY FRAME), and securing a number one single for a collaborative piece with a current country music heavyweight (Chris Young’s “Think of You”), the concept of releasing an EP after garnering the foundations of an illustrious career may seem rudimentary. But often good things come in small packages, and such would be the case with Cassadee Pope’s newest release, her Summer EP.
Produced by Corey Crowder (Young’s I’m Comin’ Over), Summer leads off with the title track, a fervent recollection of a teen in a summer love on the Florida beaches – a true display of wordsmanship, the listener feeling the intensity through the salty and breezy lyrics.
Cascading into “Piano,” Pope displays her incredibly crafted vocals, transcending through octaves as she describes
her emotions of a love gone wrong. Particularly appealing about this track: all of Pope’s musical styles are encompassed in three minutes and four seconds. Having a bit of a varied career overall, listeners can hear the country and the pop-punk of Pope’s former Hey Monday days all in a short span of time, making this song a refreshing stand-out.
Co-writing three of the four songs, Summer is truly an homage of whom Pope is as a person and as an artist: “I’ve always had a colorful imagination, and I think this new collection of songs helps show my stories in a more vibrant way.” And essentially, it does, with each of the four tracks depicting a level of emotions and imagery yet captured on any of Pope’s previous releases. “Kisses In Airports” and “Alien” are prime examples of this articulation: while one illustrates the return of a soldier embracing his family after a deployment, the latter details the juxtapositions within us all, a combination of variances in everyone.
