In a time when stories of breakups, cheating and divorce are running rapid in the news, magazines and on the radio, it’s not hard to understand why the general outlook on relationships has a “glass is half empty” mentality and that true love happens only in the plots of movies and shows. However Dan + Shay’s new single “From The Ground Up” helps fill that glass, as it’s a wonderful reassertion that relationships of lifelong love can and do exist in real life.
Written by Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney, along with Chris DeStefano, “From The Ground Up” tells the 65 year-long love story inspired by their grandparents – from the first verse you can tell that the materialistic things of marriage are not important, as the lyrics depict a modest life full of wealth in a non-material manner.
Their love runs deeper than just memories or saying “I do” or even “I love you” – they talk about starting a family, to realizing how fast their lives will fly by and confirming that no matter what life throws at them, they will be there for each other through better and worse. Their faithfulness to one another is unwavering; they know there is no one else that they would want to spend their lives with.
Dan + Shay’s harmonies elegantly deliver the lyrics of the beautifully written chorus, and you see the respect they had for their own parents, as the grandfather promises to make his wife’s father proud and be the man she deserves:
And we’ll build this love from the ground up
Now ‘til forever its all of me, all of you
Just take my hand
And I’ll be the man your dad hoped that I’d be
And we’ll build this love from the ground up
For worse or for better
And I will be all you need
Beside you I’ll stand through the good and the bad
We’ll give all we have
And we’ll build this love from the ground up
“From The Ground Up” is a wonderful ballad about true love, the work that it takes to make a relationship successful, and respect. Qualities that may not be abundant in society today, but hopefully songs like this will help bring them back front and center.
“From The Ground Up” is available on all outlets and can currently be heard on country radio.
