Dan + Shay have been on a wild ride to popularity with their boy band sound, country boy good looks, and the fun loving personalities of college frat boys, yet these two have built this popularity on pure talent…musical talent.
Since bursting onto the Nashville scene, the country duo of Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney have amassed a huge following, six award nominations (including one win), and had their first album Where It All Began yield three singles, with “Nothing Like You” going RIAA & MC Gold. The first two singles off their second album Obsession – “From The Ground Up” and “How Not To” – each earned number one status and “From the Ground Up” was also certified RIAA Platinum & MC Gold. The duo announced via Twitter that their third single would be decided by fans.
Dan + Shay took to their Twitter page asking fans which would be their choices for the next single? Fans flooded the page with suggestions and it was narrowed to three, with “Road Trippin'” “driving” away with the win. The tune written by Smyer, Mooney, and Martin Johnson was released in July 2017. The song is visually, lyrically, and musically perfect. Close your eyes as it plays and the words alone take you on your own personal road trip with friends; a time when a group of friends just want to hang out and enjoy life and each other:
We hit the river, yeah.
Skinny dipping dipping jumpin’ off the rocks.
Out to the ocean, yeah.
Put a blanket down under the Boardwalk and kick it.
We’ll live it up and throw it down with all of our best friends, we’ll drop the top, and hit the spot, the song never ends
Cause a good time with a peace of mind and just around the bend.
Are you ready? You know I’m ready. For…
Road Trippin’, summer time livin with your hands out kissin’ the wind.
Yeah let’s roll with it, radio kick it louder we’re at it again.
Stuck a little somethin’ in my old back pocket, break it out later if you like that
Major R&B infusion with a great feet stomping verse added in will pull every crowd on their feet in succession. With the duo’s signature harmony and exceptional instrument selection, it’ll be a go to summer playlist song. The only downside – it should have been released in May to give it more time for the summer concert series.
