“Love Ain’t” isn’t a song to showcase the talent of the Eli Young Band, but it does. It isn’t a song to promote the love and devotion of two people who can overcome anything, but it does. It also wasn’t a catalyst to shine a light on the Wounded Warriors Project, but it does.
Eli Young Band found a way to show what love is by showing what love ain’t and capturing the very essence of love in a video of military veteran Taylor Morris’ life. Morris was living life just like other people. He had family, friends and an amazing girlfriend, Danielle. He enlisted in the military and was sent to Afghanistan. Then life as he knew it changed.
Morris was severely injured in an incident that would change his life forever. The incident left him a quadruple amputee. Morris knew that this would change everything for him, his family and Danielle. But it didn’t change her love for him, except to maybe make it stronger. She stood by him every step of the way, even helping with his physical therapy.
For Mike Eli, this was exactly what “Love Ain’t” was all about. Love is hard to define. You can’t truly describe what it is to love someone but you can describe what it ain’t:
Love ain’t you on a sidewalk in your new dress all alone
Love ain’t you calling me because he ain’t picking up his phone
The way you’re talking sounds like he’s somebody you should hate
I may not know what love is girl, but I know what love ain’t
Come over let me show you what he can’t
‘Cause he can only show you what love ain’t
Sad movies are for crying on the couch
There in the dark
That sad song it was written
Just to try and get your heart to break
But love ain’t
“We first learned about Taylor and Danielle a couple of years ago, and there is no doubt their story speaks to what love is,” Eli said in a statement. “When thinking about their story and the deeper meaning in this song — how important love is and to know what love ain’t — we knew the video should reflect that.”
“Love Ain’t” was written by some of the master-writers in country music: Ross Copperman, Ashley Gorley, and Shane McAnally. For the members of EYB it was the perfect way to honor and remember those in their families who had served.
When it came time to make the video EYB knew that this incredible journey of intense physical therapy, the road that leads to healing, marriage and happiness, was the one that they needed to tell. They decided to partner with Wounded Warriors Project to complete the journey.
