Since signing with Big Loud Records last year, Jake Owen released a four track self-titled EP featuring his seventh #1 single “I Was Jack (You Were Diane)”. Now the hunky country music singer with a killer grin and smooth baritone voice’s latest release “Down To The Honkytonk“ has been met with similar success as its predecessor. With 54 Mediabase adds (8/21), the Rodney Clawson, Luke Laird and Shane McAnally penned single ranked as the format’s most added – a top spot prize.
The catchy tune with steady drum beats and excellent harmonies contains a lot of nostalgic references including Waylon (his dog’s name), Pabst Blue Ribbon neon light, Garth Brooks’ “Friends In Low Places” which help narrate the story. The simple half-spoken, half- sung lyrics, albeit with a bridge that’s catchy, leaves the chorus lacking substance, repeatedly saying “I go down to the Honkytonk” five times in a row … basically it’s what the entire chorus is made of.
However for Jake, it works.
He’s done the party songs, the laid back and beach loving anthems, and the totally sexy songs – all the things that Jake is, and “Honkytonk” is no different. It appears as if the tune is a bit like the man himself: simple. The simplicity way of life is the good life and the song is quirky, hokey, and down right fun.
I might not end up in the HOF
With a star on the sidewalk with my name
Or a statue in my hometown when I’m gone
Nobody gonna name their babies after me
I might not go down in history
but I’ll go down to the Honkytonk
While being met with mixed reviews, it’s a tune that purely displays Jake’s playful nature. It’s an infectious song fans will find themselves playing on repeat. Click the link above to check it out if you haven’t already!
