Louisiana born singer-songwriter Jordan Davis may have the bearded good looks like Zac Brown, but he has the musical prowess like that of Sam Hunt. With the recent release of his first single “Singles You Up”, he’s already hitting the ground running, as the single was the second most added of the week, only behind Kenny Chesney.
With determination and a little DNA, Davis eventually made his way to Nashville to begin his songwriting career. That career, albeit slow to start, was bound to happen because it runs in his blood. His uncle, Stan Dan Davis, had been a songwriter, penning at least two top 5 titles in the 1990’s for country great Tracy Lawrence. His father often wrote songs in his free time as well as his brother Jacob Davis. After some time and a helping hand from his brother, the bearded country hunk set up residence in Music City, where he eventually landed a writing contract with publishing giant UMG Nashville, and an eventual music contract as well. Davis began co-writing with Boys Like Girls guitarist Paul Giovanni, who’s written for country greats Blake Shelton, Hunter Hayes, and Dan & Shay.
“Singles You Out” is an uptempo number infused with steady drum beats and guitar licks. Davis’ mellow husky tone delivers the message of one guy vowing to get the girl of his dreams, who just happens to be in the sights of a guy less deserving. Lyrically and musically, the words paint this picture to perfection.
I haven’t heard you laugh like that in a long time / I wondered if it stopped his world like ya did mine just now / I see you sipping white wine instead of whiskey / Does he want you to be a more city / well, I’m sorry if I’m overstepping boundaries, I don’t mean to be / but I just got to tell you how I feel
Chorus:
If he ever singles you up / if he’s ever stupid enough / I’m gonna be the first one calling you baby, baby / if he ain’t holding you tight / if he ain’t treating you right / I’m gonna be the first one calling him crazy / ‘cuz girl it’s just a matter of time until you find that the right guy is staring you back into your eyes right now, no rush / but if he ever singles you up.
The combo of Davis’ voice with his bearded mountain man good looks will have listeners take notice. The song is infectious from beginning to end and will have listeners putting it on repeat. With a debut like this, Davis is on a track for a marathon of good music.
