Keith Urban and Carrie Underwood Duet in “The Fighter”

With each having their own multi selling success, country music’s famed Aussie and supreme vocalist extraordinaire, Keith Urban and Carrie Underwood, respectively, have teamed up for a pop influenced duet,The Fighter.

The latest single from Urban’s Ripcord album, is a genre-crossing tune with an upbeat tempo that has some country fans reeling on social media to express their unhappiness that the tune doesn’t sound, well…country.  The pop-infused tune, according to Urban, wasn’t suppose to sound too country – regardless, it is seeing a fast rise on the charts.  The song opens with jazz infused guitar licks, while a steady rock drum beat gets fed into the middle of the verses. There’s a steady synthesized beat throughout all while Urban and Underwood trade lines in conversation fashion.

Written by Urban and co-produced by Busbee, Urban said in an interview with The Boot that the tune was written from the perspective of simple conversation, a fete the pair pulled off with ease, about one trying to protect and heal the one he loves.  Not intending the song to be a duet, Urban has said that as he got further into the writing, it developed into one and his immediate choice was Carrie.

(Keith Urban)
I know he hurt you
Made you scared of love, too scared to love
He didn’t deserve you
Cause your precious heart is a precious heart
He didn’t know what he had and I thank God, oh, oh, oh
And it’s gonna take just a little time
But you’re gonna see that I was born to love you

(Chorus with Urban feat. Underwood)
What if I fall?
I won’t let you fall
What if I cry?
I’ll never make you cry
And if I get scared?
I’ll hold you tighter
When they’re tryna get to you baby I’ll be the fighter
won’t let you fall
What if I cry?
I promise I’ll never make you cry
And if I get scared?
I’ll hold you tighter
When they’re tryna get to you baby I’ll be the fighter

While Keith and Carrie’s vocals are well suited to each others, the tune is instantly infectious and is hard to not have on repeat.  You can find it on Urban’s Ripcord.
