It seems in this modern world of music in which we live, one thing you always hear people complain about, is the quality of music that is being released. So, when a new record is coming out, it is imperative to spread the word. On October 20, 2017, with the help of Springer Mountain Farms Chicken, one of the best albums to be released in recent years will become available by none other than Kelly Lang, titled “Obsession.” One thing that needs to be said before digging into this new material is that her voice has simply evolved with time and her songwriting is impeccable. All twelve tracks were written and produced by Kelly, allowing her to open her soul and pour out her heart in each song.
Kicking this album off with the title track, “Obsession,” Kelly will have your attention from the first chord. With a seductive beat, amazing arrangements and a vocal ability that will grab anyone’s attention, Kelly sings about a new man in her life that is turning everything upside down. She can’t do anything, except think about “him.” “I can’t eat, I can’t sleep, I’m in way to deep, I need his love” nails the chorus, leaving you begging for more. Simply put, be prepared to repeat this song over a few times, because it is addictive.
Moving things along with “Last One Standing In The Rain,” Kelly wrote this song with Barry Gibb in mind. Barry is the last of his siblings left and when you listen to the lyrics, you will understand the comparison, however it fits appropriately for any relationship that has suffered a loss. “What Do you Do When You Don’t” is another heart grabbing tune, except you will realize this match made in Heaven wasn’t meant to be. Again, Kelly’s soulful vocals and history in heartbreak showcase in every word, leaving no doubt in the end, decisions need to be made.
A personal favorite is “Under The Tennessee Moon.” We all have this place on earth where we would rather live than anywhere. Once you discover this place, it is hard to not be there. For those of us who love Tennessee more than anywhere in the world, this song will speak to you like no other. Kicking things off, singing about Nashville, The Opry and Johnny and June, you will take a musical journey throughout the state of Tennessee, ending up in Memphis. “Under The Tennessee Moon,” is remarkable and deserves to be labeled, “A Tennessee State Song.”
If you are looking for a fast-paced, tell it like it is song, “Mr. Right” needs to be heard. However, before you do, turn up the volume. No, like really turn it up. Keep going! See, “Mr. Right” is the type of song that you will be listening to and the next thing you know, you will be at a red light, being stared at by the people beside you. It’s perfectly fine to embrace it! Folks, “Mr. Right” is intense. The only other person in Country Music who could pull off this song so well would have been K.T. Oslin. It takes a special kind of vocal ability and command to prove this point. Don’t settle, find “Mr. Right.”
Now, it would be an injustice to not mention “His Guitar.” This is a killer ballad about a lady sitting in a bar. She sees another female who is in love with the guitar player, but what the female doesn’t know, is she was once in love too until he “Plucked the melody” right from her heart. The song writing, the lyrics and the emotion will have you hooked from the beginning, so be warned.
“Hell Hath No Fury” and “Lay Me Down Easy” move this album almost to a close, however “I’ll Just Hold My Breath” wraps it all up perfectly. With a slow piano introduction, Kelly sings about different situations where a loved one has done you wrong. Instead of getting mad or over reacting, sometimes simply holding your breath and hoping one day, they realize what they did. Sitting here now listening, different situations come to mind where this concept should have been used.
Music is the universal language. No matter where you are in the world, music connects us all. It comes from the heart. Do yourself a favor and get this record. Kelly Lang has put her heart and soul into this project and it shows in every word. If you are a music lover, this album is for you, and there is no doubt, it too, will become your new “Obsession.”
