Luke Bryan released the lead single, “Kick the Dust Up,” off his upcoming 5th studio album this week. The album, Kill the Lights, is due out on August 7th.
If the song reminds you of his 2013 single “That’s My Kind of Night” you aren’t crazy, it comes from the same group of songwriters, Dallas Davidson, Chris DeStefano and Ashley Gorley.
“Kick the Dust Up” is sure to do great at country radio because it plays to the bro country/party fans that are driving the trends still. “Kick the Dust Up would make the list of the 5 Worst Songs released by Luke easily in this reviewer’s mind.
The song has a few strong moments, like the guitar solo at approximately 2:20. However for those fans of Luke since the beginning, the single leaves a lot to be desired. Lyrically there’s nothing new about the song. Is it catchy? Yes, but who wants another truck, beer, girl song? We want more.
To be fair, I didn’t mind the song as much at the Sioux Falls, SD stop of the Kick the Dust Up tour so maybe it is one of those songs that is better live. But knowing the good stuff that Luke was capable of with his first albums, we simply expect more from him. There is a time and a place for the fun songs about the same old thing, but country radio needs more than that.
We’re down with hearing this song out on the lake or in the cornfield for the party, but we’re not ready to be playing it on repeat anytime soon.
Rating: Wait for it on radio
