Cassadee Pope’s latest single, “I’m Invincible”, is an outright lady anthem. In many ways the song is a “Miss Independent” or “Stronger”, showcasing the amazing vocals and determination of a very strong woman.
Lyrically the single doesn’t touch upon an untapped topic – it’s about female strength and empowerment. With souring power vocals, Cassadee sings about being unbreakable, basically, that nothing can hurt her. I could easily hear Kelly Clarkson belting out this one, as I used the reference of two of Clarkson’s chart-topping hits.
In interviews, Cassadee has stated that she doesn’t listen to just country music, mainly interested in rock, and she tries to infuse that in her music. Honestly I’m not sure “I’m Invincible” falls in either of those genres, but instead floats in middle of the pop ocean with a touch of mandolin. Shania Twain had major pop appeal with songs that could fit in beautifully with a few radio formats. However, I don’t see country music playing the same Cassadee Pope song over and over.
On my first listen I thought “I’m Invincible” sounded way too familiar – it follows the popular format many female artists have adapted to try to reach mass appeal, which is unfortunate considering the depth of Cassadee’s abilities. For such a powerful tune, she really is selling herself short. Is it a good song? Sure. Is it empowering? Absolutely. However in the scope of providing quality and original songs to a format that fans are growing frustrated with, we feel that Cassadee missed the mark.
Rating: Wait for it at radio.
